Equipos de rescate con helicópteros y perros rastreaban el miércoles los cerros alrededor de la localidad costera de Santa Barbara, en California, en busca de personas atrapadas o fallecidas por deslaves que dejaron al menos 15 muertos.

El área es hogar de celebridades entre las que figuran Oprah Winfrey y Ellen DeGeneres, que disfrutan de su belleza natural y cercanía a Los Angeles.





Pero las laderas boscosas que alguna vez dieron a estas propiedades una sensación de aislamiento quedaron despojadas tras los incendios del año pasado, dejando el terreno propicio para avalanchas que arrasaron casas, convirtieron carreteras en ríos y barrieron vehículos tras las intensas lluvias del martes.

“Estamos encontrando gente constantemente”, dijo Yaneris Muniz, portavoz del Centro de Información Conjunta del condado de Santa Bárbara.

Autoridades han ordenado a los residentes de una amplia franja de Montecito, en Santa Bárbara, a permanecer en sus hogares para que los rescatistas puedan hacer mejor su trabajo.

Unas 300 personas quedaron aisladas en un cañón. Equipos locales de rescate, utilizando helicópteros de la guardia costera estadounidense, trabajaron para sacarlos de ese lugar por aire, dijeron autoridades.

El condado inicialmente había ordenado a 7.000 residentes que evacuaran y llamó a otros 23.000 a hacer lo mismo voluntariamente, pero sólo entre 10 y 15 por ciento cumplieron las órdenes, dijo Amber Anderson, portavoz de los bomberos del condado.

“No sabemos cuántas personas más están atrapadas”, informó el alguacil de Santa Barbara, Bill Brown, a la cadena CBS.

El número de víctimas sobrepasó el balance del deslave del 10 de enero de 2005 en California en que 10 personas murieron al ceder la ladera de un cerro en la localidad de La Conchita, a menos de 30 kilómetros al sur del último desastre.

Los incendios del mes pasado, incluido el denominado Thomas que afectó a más de 110.000 hectáreas y fue el más grande en la historia de California, dejó el área vulnerable a avalanchas de barro. Los incendios arrasaron con la vegetación que ayuda a contener el terreno y con una capa cerosa que impide la absorción muy profunda del agua en la tierra, reseñó Reuters.
