The Presidential Commissioner for Foreign Relations of Venezuela, Julio Borges, referred this Wednesday to the crisis that is being experienced on the border between Bolivia and Chile caused by the transit of Venezuelan migrants. Mr. Borges called on Chile to evaluate its immigration policies in order to prevent more Venezuelans from falling into the hands of organized mafias or risking their lives on this journey. He pointed out that those who break the law and commit crimes in the countries should be prosecuted, but it is necessary to protect those who are fleeing the dictatorship.

“The situation with Venezuelan migrants on the border between Bolivia and Chile shows that a restrictive migration policy only increases illegal crossings, human trafficking, and exposes the lives of those fleeing the dictatorship. This year 11 migrants have died trying to enter Chile irregularly. It is urgent that the Chilean government evaluate its regulatory framework and allow safe and humane migration,” he said.
The Venezuelan diplomat called to follow the example of Colombia, a country that decided to implement a temporary protection statute to regularize migrants. “The example of Colombia must be replicated by all countries. The fact of regularizing migrants and adopting a migration framework with clear rules has made it possible to strengthen legal and safe migration, the economic development of the country, and brotherhood ties. Without a doubt, that integration is the solution to address this human drama, while at the same time pressing for democratic change in the country to stop forced migration,” he said.
